Having grown up in Central Illinois, the Pekin, Groveland, Morton area you tend to try and find the old haunts and familiar food places from your past or that unique one of a kind spot when you come back to visit the region. Now that I live in Florida and don't make it up that way very often, Sunday I had a Flight out of Peoria and was looking for something to pass the time before sitting in the airport for an hour. Hello Kuchies on the River. Located near North Pekin, Creve Coeur, East Peoria and only a few minutes from the Airport. Is it a locals joint, dive bar, after church lunch spot, family friendly dining spot, a boating bar, biker bar, just a place to chill along the Illinois river eat some grub and have an adult beverage or two? YES, and YES to it all. Now to the locals reading this it may be common knowledge but if you are a dirt road wanderer like myself this is a great off the path stop. Depending on how you get there it may be hard for non locals to find. Yes it's down a dirt road, yes it's down an old paved river road it just depends on which direction you come in from. The North Pekin ride in is a bit of a gruff gravel/dirt road past the lock and dam, the train area, and grain elevator and almost looks abandoned and like the road hasn't been updated since the Army Corp of engineers probably built it WAY back in the day. If you are coming from East Peoria area the river road is paved and takes you into the boat launch area and you have to really look for the little in the ground signs to point you the direction. Sunday I stopped by for one reason and one reason only! I had read the YELP reviews about this colossal Bloody Mary called the Ship Wreck! The Ship Wreck is a Bloody Mary served in a Mason Jar with all of the following, A Slider, Bacon, Olives, Shrimp and Tomato, Meatballs, Colby Jack Cheese and of course Celery and made with UV Sriracha Vodka. I am pretty sure this will cure anything that is ailing you at the time of your visit. With just about all the food groups present and the bold pepper kick of the Sriracha Vodka it's pretty close to being a meal. Now if you are a big guy like me you may want to add an appetizer to the mix but if you are looking for a quick snack this might just do it. Service here on a Sunny Sunday afternoon was great the inside was fairly empty except for the bar area, and the large deck overlooking the Illinois was pretty filled out and as mentioned it was a mix of just about every kind of person you could think of. This will be on my list of places to try again as I hear the Burgers are massive as well and everyone I sat around was really please with their meals. Since I live in Florida and hit the beach lunch spots often this would be the Midwest version of that for sure. On those great Sunny, perfect weather days sitting river side might be the prescription for those Winter blues.

Nice deck overlooking the Illinois River boat and barge scene. Food, service, menu and pricing were all good. Had fish & chips, reuben and Moby Dick.

A people place of diversity. Bikers, Boaters, Families and Locals alike, with an occasional Gawker! We come to eat and drink on the Rivers Edge. All are welcome to participate and it seems to work. The River has a calming effect while seated on the large deck. Water is a human attraction and Kuchie's is a definite destination.

Great service and excellent food! The waitress was so fun and we ended up chatting with her and the owner for quite a while! The pretzel balls are mouth watering and I can't wait to try their famous bloody Mary on a Sunday!

I wish I didn't live in colorado so I could enjoy Kuchies more. I was in town visiting and my dad took me here Sunday before my flight. I had the shipwreck Bloody Mary and man oh man what a treat!! It's huge! A slider, bacon, celery, shrimp, meatballs, cheese, pickles and olives. I'm a Bloody Mary lover so this exceeded all of my expectations. The atmosphere was great, very dive bar style but very relaxed and casual. People from everywhere, bikers, boaters and families. Waitresses were very attentive and helpful and the owner was running around meeting people as well. I wish I could make this my regular spot but 1,200 miles is in my way. Go here, you won't regret it!

Nice little place tucked away along the waterfront. Great food, huge portions. Plan on sharing or taking some home. The patio's nice when the weather cooperates. Enjoyed the live music.

Awesome food and drinks. Outstanding Bloody Mary, out waitress was really fun. Corn Fritters to really really good. I had Kuchie burger and she had Moby Dick. Both really good. Nice atmosphere and friendly place. Sitting on River Bank was really nice change of pace to your typical places to eat. Will come back.

Excellent food and a great atmosphere. It wasn't easy to get to, but when we got there, we were treated like family. Everyone there was very friendly and provided top notch service. On Sunday, they even have a Bloody Mary topped with a cheeseburger. Definitely worth the trip!

Made a dinner run here from a day out boating and was very impressed with this location! The menu is way more varied than your usual bar & grill and the outdoor seating is awesome! Very clean with a lot of seating, a tree growing up through the deck provides some nice natural shade, fast and efficient service out there too- sometimes servers neglect their tables all the way outside but not here. I got the grouper dinner grilled (also had blackened for an extra $) with a loaded baked as my side which was also a little extra and then a side salad. It was a nice piece of fish. It wasn't gigantic but the incredible potato filled me up so it worked out great. Salad was a salad, balanced off the bacon and sour cream on my potato! I think it was around $15 for that meal which is an awesome deal. With the name, slogan (It's better down where it's wetter) and the drink I ordered (the Pink Kuchie- which was addictively delicious!) you might get the wrong idea about this place. It sounds risque and adult but it's really a nice place...maybe not for teenage boys but everyone else needs to try it out! Hopefully I can find it again from land ;)

I wish I could rate this place higher because all food was delicious. However, service was not only slow but inexcusable. When we arrived we were told we could not under any circumstances open the side gate to get our stroller with sleeping toddler in. Within 5 minutes of being seated the side gate was opened for another person who had a wheelchair. After a one hour wait we inquired about our food and were told that many large groups had come in just after us. We thought it was strange that large groups should affect our food prep but accepted it until we noticed two other small group tables that came in after us being served. We them told them we need an update on the food and if it could not be delivered within 5 minutes we would need to pay for drinks only (drinks also almost never refilled or taken to refill but not returned. Our food was then delivered. I was appalled that all of this had happened which resulted in a one and half hour lunch with two young children who remained quiet and well behaved thoughout (much to my amazement) and we were not offered any sort of formal apology nor discount.

I went to Kuchie's for my 21st birthday yesterday and it was great. I had an adult lemon shake up and a chicken wrap. We sat on the deck and watched the river. Food was excellent, service was wonderful, and the owner is pretty great too! I'll definitely be back soon.

Very fun to place, a little tricky to find. Food is fabulous and everything on it is unique. Not your ordinary burger chicken joint. Right on the water. Comedy boat, barge or bike

Popped into Kuchie's for a burger on a Sunday night. Kitchen closes at 8 so glad we made it under the wire. I ordered a Black and Blue and my dining partner had a Bacon Cheeseburger. Both came with fries. I was dissapointed upon seeing the amount of fries at first, BUT, quickly realized they were the right amount due to the HUGE burgers we were served! Both were quite delicious and I would love to try some of the others another time. We also both ordered some cocktails and they were right on par with how a good beverage should taste. Service was also top notch--our waitress was very attentive and friendly. My only complaint is our table could have used wiped down prior to us sitting there so someone else's food residue was present, but the waterfront scenery made up for that.

This establishment is accessible by boat and has patio dining overlooking the river, so we stop here a lot during boating season. The menu has quite a few options (not just burgers) and the food and service are good. 2014 Edit: This review was for Captain Ron's, not Kuchie's, where I have never been.

Captain Ron's a dive bar with a outdoor deck overlooking the Illinois River. It is accessible by car or by boat. It's a nice laid back place to have a few drinks and burger with friends. It's definitely a dive bar atmosphere, so it's very casual. Standard bar food and drinks with a nice view. I'll be back when I'm in the area again!

Let's be honest. I came for the epic Shipwreck Bloody Mary, which is only served on Sunday. Requested a vegetarian version (just the olives, celery, and cheese) but was told that it is an all or nothing thing. So I just got a regular one, which was still refreshing and spicy. The Siracha vodka that they use, combined with the pepper gives the drink a kick in the a**. One of the best bloody marys I've had in a long time. Service was great and our waitress was fantastic and helpful. There was a yelp check in offer for pretzel balls, which our server also recommended. They were served piping hot with the most wonderful garlic herb butter on top. You could really just get a Shipwreck and an appetizer and be full, but I also opted for the black bean chipotle burger (vegetarian). Not bad for a veggie burger. The kuchie fries were a little underwhelming and weren't seasoned at all. Will definitely be back to sit on that deck and gaze out onto that um, majesticly murky? Illinois River. One tip: we got there at 11:30 and there were a few open deck tables and the restaurant inside was empty. By 12:30 it was packed both inside and out. Get there early on Sundays!

Fun place, food at the deck overlooking the water, Friendly service. Boat dock in the back. Drive to the place was little bumpy and long. But it's worth it. Only thing could be a little bit more cleaner.

The food was excellent. The atmosphere would have been perfect, if not for the flies. There were 3 that didn't want to leave us alone. Did I mention the food was excellent? My burger was cooked perfectly. The fries were great. My boyfriend's walleye was superb. We are definitely coming back on a cooler day to take advantage of the gorgeous patio.
